La creatividad del autor va desde concebir una idea y realizar la obra hasta titularla. Con ingenio, Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) escribió textos bellísimos aunque disparatados, como El Jabberwocky, mostrando que el lenguaje siempre puede reexaminarse.
Lo descifrable del poema son algunas palabras que Carroll pronuncia en inglés. Humpty Dumpty intentó explicárselo a Alicia cuando ya no está en El País de las Maravillas porque cruzó el espejo, pero apenas analiza la primera estrofa.
Sugiere versar sobre un monstruo, quizás alguna bestia mitológica, pero también aparenta ser solo neologismo. Carroll inventó su idioma tomando elementos de acepciones ordinarias para todos.
Mediante Alicia, el personaje principal de Carroll, se lleva a cabo la lectura de estas siguientes líneas:
Twas brillig, and the slighty toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought–
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

El sentido permanece más allá de que las palabras sean comprendidas literalmente con distintas referencias. Una parte de la intuición yace en su significado, pero otra, quizás mayor, en nuestra conciencia de lo que significan.
